For the first time in the history of the Midwest National Spring Show, a red cow emerged the winner of both the Red and White and Black and White shows, April 22-23, at the Alliant Energy Center, Madison.

Now known as the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase 2016, this year's show included the inaugural Jersey show, which attracted over 75 Jerseys (see related story). This year's Holstein show saw Judge Tim Abbott sort through 148 heifers and 84 cows, for a total of 232 head.

This year's duo champion is last year's International Red and White Show Grand Champion, Strans-Jen-D Tequila-Red-ET, a 5-year-old fresh since August who will calve again this year to defend her title at World Dairy Expo. She is owned by Milk Source Genetics, Kaukauna.

In his reasons, Judge Tim Abbott commented 'This Red cow is on the money. She has a tremendous frame along with that beautiful udder. She wins pretty easily for me today.' He added, 'Taking nothing away from our reserve grand champion, who follows the same pattern (as Tequila).' She was the winning senior 3-year-old, Beaverbrock Goldwyn Zoey-ET, exhibited by Peter & Lyn Vail and Budjon Farms, Lomira, who also earned intermediate champion honors.

Reserve intermediate champion and the best udder cow of the show also came from the senior 3-year class, Arolene Goldwyn Divine, the second-place senior 3 co-owned by J. Volker, D Hoven & Rosedale Genetics, Oxford.

During the senior 3-year-old class, judge Abbott stated, 'This is a breath-taking class, the best class of the day. The winner is the epitome of a dairy frame – she's big, tall, has great feet and legs and a fantastic udder. Both of these 3-year-olds are on the money – there's a lot of great things about them – it's quite a logical placing,' when it comes to intermediate and reserve intermediate champion.

The reserve senior champion of the show was the winning 4-year-old, TK-Plain-View Ripley, paraded by Milk Source LLC, Kaukauna. High honorable mention senior champion and the champion bred and owned of the entire show also came from the 4-year-old class, Siemers Atwood Monalisa, bred by Crystal, Jordan, Josh, Jake, Connor and Lauren Siemers. 'These are the kind of cows you admire. They are the kind of cows that put it together perfectly for me.'

With several animals in the top 5 of their respective classes, Mike and Julie Duckett, Rudolph, brought home the coveted Premier Breeder banner while Milk Source Genetics earned the Exhibitor Banner. Braedale Goldwyn was Premier Sire.

In a very competitive heifer show, two spring yearlings stole the show. 'These heifers are in the ring with the deepest of the deep. This is one of the greatest heifers shows I've ever judged,' Abbott claimed.

Damibel Airlift Marisa, was tapped for junior champion, the same honor won out east at the New York show a few weeks ago for Noah Bilz, Dorchester. Reserve junior champion as well as junior champion of the junior show was Siemers Rgd Lady-Haya-ET, owned with Crystal, Jordan, Josh, Jake, Connor and Lauren Siemers. Reserve junior champion of the junior show for J, L & M Harbaugh, Marion, was the fifth-place fall calf, Oakfield Brokaw Thelma-ET.

'The spring yearlings was the class of the day – they are 10 heifers deep that are very competitive.'

In junior competition, another senior 3-year-old found her way to the winner's circle. RJR Sid 3273-ET was tapped for grand and senior champion for Connor Erbsen, Lanark, IL. Reserve senior and grand champion went to a junior 2-year-old, Jacobs Windbrook Delay-ET, paraded by Cory Schmidt, Cosmos, MN. 'These two animals stood right in the top of their classes.'

One more senior 3-year-old took home top honors for Tyler, Cole and Mikayla Endres – KNH-Endres Atlantic Orlando was chosen for champion bred and owned honors of the junior show.
