Waupun FFA members were up and at it early Monday morning with one thought in mind: to thank farmers for their contributions to the ag industry.

Twenty-five members were at Waupun High School at 5:30 a.m. with their sleeves rolled up to bake, frost and then deliver hot, fresh, cinnamon rolls to area farmers in recognition of National Agriculture Week.

Throughout the week, FFA Chapters across the nation were encouraged to plan activities to help bring awareness to agriculture. Each day of the week sported different themes for recognizing and celebrating farmers.

Both local farmers and Waupun FFA members look forward to the opening day of National Ag Week. For years now the chapter has marked "Thank a Farmer" day with the Bun Run which has become a tradition under ag educator Tari Costello's watchful eye.

"This is one of my favorite activities of the year," said FFA senior Logan Pluim.

Just as the sun was rising, FFA members entered barns and milking parlors throughout the Waupun Area School District to deliver the aromatic rolls, much to the delight of farmers—and students making the deliveries.

"This is just a token of appreciation to our area farmers for all that they do," said Bun Run event Chairman Tiffany Van Buren. "Our American farmers produce the best quality and quantity of food available anywhere in the world."

Other themes for the week include: Tuesday—National Ag Day in which students, community members recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture by reaching out to legislators; Wednesday—School Day is an opportunity for students to bring their favorite fruit or vegetable to class along with information about where and how the produce is grown; Thursday—Community Day encourages discussions around community about agriculture or post facts on agriculture around the community; and Friday—Share your #SpeakAg Story Day. Students and educators are asked to post pictures from National Ag Week on social media.
