Johnsonville recalls sausage products due to possible contamination
WASHINGTON – A Wisconsin sausage-maker is recalling nearly 110,000 pounds of smoked pork sausage products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.
The fully cooked pork sausage items produced by Johnsonville, LLC, of Sheboygan Falls were produced on Jan. 4, 2018. The following products are subject to recall:
- 14-oz. plastic packages containing 6 pieces of “JALAPEÑO CHEDDAR Smoked Sausage” with Best By date 04/04/2018 and Batch ID 1001124486 or 1001124487.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 34224” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
Johnsonville received three calls to its consumer hotline about the issue and, based on that information, it immediately launched an investigation and recall, said Kelly Seifert, a company spokeswoman.
Consumers relayed that they had found pieces of hard, green plastic in the sausage product.
The recalled product amounts to 12,500 cases (109,603 pounds) and represents a fraction of Johnsonville's overall production.
The investigation is continuing, Seifert said.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.
