Graze River Country pasture walk hosted by Larson family
COLFAX – Brad and Melissa Larson will host the final Graze River Country pasture walk of the season from 9 a.m to noon, Oct. 28 on their farm at N10688 Cty. Rd. M, Colfax. The walk will highlight how fall cover crops can fit into a grazing operation.
Larson Valley Farm was established in 2004 and is home to a herd of 40 beef cattle. The Larsons primarily rotationally graze their herd all summer. The herd calves February through April, so the calves are up and on the go when the grass starts to grow.
Brad and Melissa are in their eighth year of no-till corn and third year as a 100 percent no-till farm (including new seeding). They have dabbled with cover crops for many years but recently started getting more serious about their implementation.
Through their use of cover crops and grazing, the Larsons hope to reduce or even eliminate the need for commercial fertilizers and better manage drought years. They also are aiming for a 240-day grazing window.
This pasture walk is being presented in partnership by Dunn County Farmers Union and River Country RC&D. Join us for pie and networking after the walk.
To get to the farm from Highway 40 in Colfax, drive east through town and turn left on Hwy. M. Follow Hwy. M approximately 4.5 miles and the farm will be on the right side of the road.
