MARINETTE COUNTY - NRCS, along with the Land & Water Conservation and UW-Extension offices of Marinette and Oconto Counties are sponsoring a two-part field day on Tuesday, August 29.

The two neighboring sites are both housed on Kuchta Farms property and will allow attending producers to gain exceptionally valuable information on both corn silage management and soil health management and the proper use of cover crops in our area.

The first portion of the day will feature soil health & cover crops and will be held at W6041 Marinette Cty. Hwy. M, starting at 9:30 a.m. In addition to a walk through of the cover crop plots in place there, there will be the opportunity to see many different aspects of soil health in action.

A soil pit will allow producers to better understand what really goes on beneath the surface of the soil when soil management practices are utilized. Additionally, there will be displays & demonstrations of soil management implements, and the chance to see what happens when rainfall events hit different soil management regimens via the NRCS Rainfall Simulator.

The second portion of the field day event focuses on corn silage management and will be held just down the road at W6586 Cty. Hwy. M.

Lunch and registration will take place from noon to 1 p.m., with the program starting at 1 p.m. Keynote presenter at this event will be UW / UW-Extension Corn Agronomist Joe Lauer. He will be discussing crop rotation effects on corn grain and silage yields; new corn hybrid developments; and getting ready for corn silage harvest & planning appropriately.

Additional topics at the corn silage field day will include chop management settings and how to check them on your machine, as well as inoculant usage and packing techniques. The entire day’s events are available to all producers and will include lunch and refreshments. There will be a $5 registration fee collected at noon to cover lunch costs, with sponsoring agencies covering all other costs of attendance. Pre-registration is appreciated by contacting the Marinette County UW-Extension office at 715-732-7510 and leaving a message with how many will be attending.
