Graze River Country pasture walk series to kick off June 14
CHIPPEWA FALLS – River Country RC&D and Wisconsin Farmers Union are partnering to present a series of pasture walks this summer and fall highlighting graziers across western Wisconsin.
The series will kick off with a Twilight Walk at 6:30pm Wed., June 14 at the John Accola farm, S363 Cty. Rd. Y, Mondovi.
John and Teresa Accola purchased the farm in 2000 from Teresa's father, who ran a dairy for about 15 years until the barn burned in the 1970s. John renamed the farm Broken Oak Acres and started a beef herd in 2001 with six cows with heifer calves at their side. He started with a registered Black Angus herd and has continued with the addition of Red Angus.
Accola utilizes a rotational grazing system. About five years ago he added a traveling-gun irrigation system to increase grazing production. He produces most of his feed – corn and hay – and has experimented with sorghum and flax. He also recently incorporated winter rye into corn stalk stubble. The pasture walk will also focus on Accola’s pasture renovation efforts.
To get to the farm from Eleva take Hwy 93 south to Cty Rd Y. Turn right and continue on Y approximately 5 miles. John’s farm is on the right hand side of Cty Rd Y. If you reach Norden Road you have gone 1/8 of a mile too far.
"Wisconsin Farmers Union recognizes not only the conservation benefits of grazing but also the potential for grazing events to build community among farmers in the region," said WFU Executive Director Tom Quinn. "We're looking forward to getting out on a number of farms across western Wisconsin and seeing some of the innovative practices happening in the grazing network."
There will be a light dinner and pie social after the pasture walk. Please RSVP to Mary C. Anderson at 715-579-2206. The schedule is subject to change, and more events will be added. For more information, visit the events page at www.wisconsinfarmersunion.com or www.rivercountryrcd.org.
