RIVER FALLS - A total of $145,000 was awarded to students in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at UW-River Falls at their 51st Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet, April 20 at Kilkarney Hills Golf Club. Students and their family members, donors, and faculty and staff made up the 300 guests. The 150 scholarships were awarded to continuing students, who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in the 2017-18 academic year.

Three new scholarships were among those awarded:

The Muraski-Schraufnagel Endowed Scholarship for agricultural business majors.
The Matthew H. and Ann L. (Hughes) Renn Annual Scholarship for agricultural education majors.
The Engineering and Engineering Technology Annual Scholarship for students enrolled in one of those programs.

Jake Sailer of Sailer’s Food Market and Meat Processing, Inc., of Elmwood was the recipient of the 2017 CAFES Outstanding Service Award. Gary Onan, professor and chair of the Animal and Food Science Department nominated Sailer for the award. Fifteen years ago Onan contacted Sailer for assistance with preparing the meat animal judging team for competition and the support Sailer’s provides to the college has grown extensively since that time. Sailer’s works with the animal science instructors to meet their classroom needs, supports student organization activities and fundraisers, and opens his facility for 4-H/FFA market animal project workshops.

On the evening of the CAFES awards banquet, Jake Sailer was enroute to the South Dakota Association of Meat Processors convention where he had been invited to give a presentation the following day. His mother, Mary Sailer, accepted the award on his behalf and shared his thoughts on receiving the award. He was genuinely surprised by the award wondering what he had done to deserve it. Sailer views his collaboration with UWRF as a way to support the meat industry. He is eager to share his knowledge, skills and services with young people because the industry needs them. Supporting youth is something Sailer takes great pride in.
