Tractor Supply Co. now open in former Shopko in Oconto
OCONTO – Tractor Supply Co. officially opened its new Oconto store on Oct. 2, a week after its “soft opening.”
Tractor Supply, which bills itself as “a rural lifestyle retailer,” offers a wide range of products, such as animal feed, pet food and supplies, propane, fencing, garden supplies and home supplies.
The store at 126 Charles St. is in the former Shopko, which closed in June 2019.
Ron Hayes, president of the Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce, said the opening of the store fills a vacant storefront and demonstrates the growth of the community.
“This sends a good message that Oconto is really thriving now,” he said.
The store also offers merchandise that either hadn’t been available, or only was available on a limited basis, since Shopko closed, Hayes noted, including clothing and campground equipment.
A spokesperson for Tractor Supply said the store will hire about 15 people, with at least half of the jobs being full-time positions. Anyone interested in applying can visit TractorSupply.com/careers.
The former Shopko was suggested to the company in late February, and a deal was formalized about a month later, company officials said previously.
The building was sold in May for $550,000, according to online Department of Revenue records.
Oconto Tractor Supply is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
The company says it’s taken numerous steps to protect customers and employees during the coronavirus pandemic, including adding a dedicated greeter at every store location to drive awareness of social distancing, monitoring the number of customers in its stores, investing in mobile point of sale and contactless payment options, offering contactless curbside delivery, and increasing daily cleaning.
Also, the hour from 8 to 9 a.m. on Wednesdays is set aside for high-risk customers and seniors 60 and older.
As of June 26, the Brentwood, Tenn.-based retailer operated 1,955 stores with more than 45,000 employees in 49 states. By the end of October, the company will have 29 stores in Wisconsin. The nearest stores to Oconto are in Marinette and Shawano.
Tractor Supply reached $10.6 billion in sales in 2020, an increase of more than 27% for all stores and 23% for same store sales.
The 81-year-old company, which opened its 1000th store in 2011, has moved steadily up on the Fortune 500 list of the nation’s largest companies since first being listed in 2014. It was ranked 291st this year.
