Nanticoke Health Services, based in Seaford, has announced that it has chosen to affiliate with Salisbury's Peninsula Regional Health System.
“Over the past 18 months, the Nanticoke Health Services Board of Directors evaluated multiple organizations and concluded Peninsula Regional is well equipped to help us accomplish this goal," said said Steve Rose, president and CEO of Nanticoke Health Services, in a statement. "We share a similar culture and commitment to community."
The two organizations still have to sign a letter of intent, which lets them start discussions and form a definitive agreement for affiliation, according to a Monday news release.
“Our efforts have been focused on enhancing the quality of our complex, hospital-based services while improving access and the health of our communities," said Steven Leonard, president and CEO of Peninsula Regional Health System.
Peninsula Regional Health System talked about another partnership with McCready Hospital in Somerset County in March 2018.
Rose said the two organizations hope to eventually provide more outpatient services on Delmarva. It's unclear at this stage where those new locations would be, and when the organizations will begin exploring.
“We recognize that healthcare is rapidly evolving," Rose said. "Building a stronger healthcare system will be necessary to continue to provide quality care for patients and to enhance what the Nanticoke team and our community have built together."
Rose said the partnership hopes to help give “better access” to local health care, including primary care. That means Delawareans will not have to travel to Salisbury to get their health care thanks to the new partnership, he said.
Nanticoke Health Services has provided care in Sussex County since 1952, according to the release. It has a 99-bed inpatient unit, outpatient diagnostic and therapy services with several locations throughout the county. It has been nationally recognized by Healthgrades with its Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award, according to the release.
Nanticoke also includes the Nanticoke Physician Network, a group of more than 60 employed physicians and health care providers as well as three immediate care locations.
Peninsula Regional Health System includes the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. PRMC was established in 1897, has 288 acute care beds, is the eighth largest hospital in Maryland, and the region’s largest, most advanced health care facility.
