New San Angelo fusion restaurant is a culinary trip around Asia
SAN ANGELO – An Asian fusion restaurant is ready to share its food with San Angelo.
Basil, 3520 Knickerbocker Road Suite C, opened up in mid-February at the old Indian Cuisine — Taste of the Himalayas location.
Basil's cuisine is a trip around Asia, featuring Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese food. Phan picked some of the most popular items from each country.
"We want to bring a taste of our food to San Angelo and try our tweaks on things," said Nikki Phan, owner of Basil. "We work hard and hope people will like our food."
The name Basil comes from the herb, but has a deeper meaning. There are many varieties of basil, so by being named Basil, it encompasses all cuisines.
Her husband and Basil chef, Hong Phan, has experience in the restaurant business. He owned a Japanese restaurant for 12 years. When the family first moved to San Angelo five years ago from New England, he worked in several other restaurants.
"He loves to cook and make people happy," Nikki said.
They were supposed to take over the location last year, but there were some delays. While they waited, they started the food truck, Hong & Nikki's Asian Foods, on Goodfellow Air Force Base.
The food truck was constantly busy and often sold out by 7 p.m., Nikki said, but people off base could not try it.
"I'm excited that we can hold so many people," Nikki said.
Basil's hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday and closed Monday.
