An 8-year-old boy died late Friday night when his father accidentally ran him over with a piece of farming equipment, authorities said.

The boy’s father was working about 11 p.m. on a farm on Viaduct Road in Dane when he accidentally ran over the child with a skid steer loader, according to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. The boy suffered head trauma.

The initial 911 call indicated the boy may have been trampled by a cow, but responding crews found this was incorrect.

Paramedics, deputies and the farm owner tried to save the boy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

The boy and his father were recent immigrants from Nicaragua and do not have any family in the area. The Dane County District Attorney’s Office is working to help acquire funding to send the boy’s body back to Nicaragua, the sheriff’s office said.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death accidental.
