For the next month, students from across northeast and north central Wisconsin have a rare chance to name the world’s fastest animal by submitting an entry in the Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) and Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary’s annual Name the Chicks contest.

The contest is now open, with entries being accepted through April 30.

For the second year, all kindergarten through eighth grade students who attend school in the WPS service area can submit a name for one of the peregrine falcon chicks born inside the nest boxes at the energy company’s J.P. Pulliam and Weston power plants.

Last year, “Serenity,” “Orville” and “Morgan Freebird” were among the eight winning entries selected.

Students who submit a winning entry will receive:

  • A certificate.
  • A photograph with the peregrine falcon chicks.
  • An invitation to the banding of the peregrine falcon chicks in late May or early June.
  • An opportunity for the student’s entire classroom: A behind-the-scenes tour of the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary’s Birds of Prey exhibit, a birds of prey presentation from the Raptor Education Group Inc. or a classroom presentation by a peregrine falcon expert.

To take part in the Name the Chicks contest, students must fill out the online entry form or mail a completed entry form to WPS or the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. Each student may enter only one name. If a name entered by more than one student is selected, the winner will be chosen through a random drawing.

Since 1996, more than 90 peregrine falcons have hatched inside the WPS nest boxes, helping increase the population of a species that remains endangered in Wisconsin.
