UW-Extension cattle feeders workshops slated for March 1

This year’s Cattle Feeders Workshop on March 1 includes a variety of useful information for farmers finishing both dairy and beef breed steers.

The University of Wisconsin-Extension will be holding the annual Cattle Feeders Workshop March 1 at Jake’s Northwoods in Sparta. This year’s workshop includes a variety of useful information for farmers finishing both dairy and beef breed steers. 

Registration and a meal will begin at 5:30 pm with presentations starting at 6:30 p.m., and the workshop should conclude at about 8:45 p.m.

Dr. Randy Shaver, UW-Extension and UW-Madison Dairy Nutritionist, will show us how corn starch properties and kernel processing can impact feedlot cattle performance.

Corn in various forms is important in Wisconsin feedlot rations. Recent research has shed new light on how kernel starch properties, fermentation, and particle size, can affect cattle performance. Dr. Shaver has presented this information to cattle feeders in Kansas and Nebraska.

Recently several decision making tools were updated and added to the Wisconsin Beef Information Center including cow calf, stocker, and feedlot enterprise budgets, a yardage calculator, and close out budget. Bill Halfman, UW-Extension, will be providing an overview and demonstration of these tools. 

Safety for people and cattle during hauling, minimizing bruising, and biosecurity are all important components of successful transportation of cattle.  Adam Hady, UW-Extension, will provide an update on transportation quality assurance, and what you can do on your farm to address this increasingly important topic. 

Dr. Brenda Boetel, UW-Extension and UW-River Falls Livestock Economist, will present her annual market outlook for 2018.
