MADISON - On a crispy and damp morning, as rain drops gently fell on the rooftop of the New Holland Pavilions at the Alliant Energy Center, inside, fans hummed along with the tune of gentle moos and coos.

Cattle cleaned and new bedding brought out, men and women dressed in Carhartts and rubber washing boots, perform chores in the morning light, preparing for a full day of showing cattle.

The sweet smell of hay wafts through the aisles as the best black and white Holstein cattle munch, filling their bellies for the job to be done. As the morning sun moves higher in the April sky, anticipation rises with; it’s show day at the Midwest National Spring Holstein Show.

“It’s no secret, I love this cow,” Official Judge Chad Ryan remarked in his reasons upon selecting Lovhill Braxton Funky-ET as the Grand Champion of the National Midwest Spring Show, April 29, 2017, in Madison, WI. “She’s stylish, well balanced, and has a tremendous rear udder.”

Ryan went on as he placed the top three females of the day. Lovhill Braxton Funky-ET, was exhibited by J, Z, & D Stransky of Owatonna, MN.

The Midwest National Spring Show began in 1984 in Madison. Since then, the show has moved between Madison and Jefferson, WI, but ultimately returning to the capital city.

Since the renovation of the Dane County grounds, the Wisconsin Holstein Association has been able to utilize the New Holland Pavilions to showcase some of the Midwest’s greatest dairy cattle each spring. 2016 was the inaugural year of the Midwest Dairy Showcase, bringing Red & White Holsteins as well as Jersey cattle to the show. This year, Ayrshires and Milking Shorthorns also joined in on the fun, making the event a well-rounded and well-represented showcase of several breeds in the Midwest.
