Marshfield — The 2016 WI National Farmers Organization State Convention was held Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Holiday Inn Marshfield, WI.

After opening formalities, WI State President Don Hamm introduced National Director Tom Crosby and National Director Jim Hayes who spoke to the convention body about NFO’s strengths, the up-coming National Board Meeting and the support NFO has for the Young Leadership Meetings being held around the Mid-West which began in IA this year and will continue in other location the next 3 years.

NFO National President Paul Olson spoke to the delegates regarding NFO’s future direction. Olson noted the need for supply management plus the importance of organizing through NFO. Many areas of our country are asking for an NFO presence in their area to help raise prices for their local family farms.

Olson said large agricultural mergers have sparked financial problems for small family farms in rural areas around the country.

“Good food from good people is something consumers are asking for. Vertical integration is happening to the dairy the same as the hog and poultry which consumers are not aware of. Consumers want and need our products," Olson said.

Tom Crosby was re-elected as a 2-year NFO National Director while Pete Brickner was voted in as his alternate. Don Hayes was newly elected into a 3-year State Trustee position.

The first place essay winner of this year’s Steve Pavich Memorial Scholarship was presented to Allissa Frisle of Prairie Farm, WI.  Allissa thanked the NFO for the scholarship and read part of her winning essay to the convention body. Second place went to Zachary Propst from Beaver Dam, WI.

Dave Kaseno presented the Dairy report which showed NFO growth in the eastern part of the country in 2016 and more future growth expected within the Upper Midwest Region.

Garry Crosby head of the National NFO Livestock Department reported on livestock followed by Tim Boortz and Miranda Meiers of the NFO Grain Department who reported on organic and conventional grain.

The National Farmers Organization National Convention will be held Jan. 25– 27, 2017, at the Ramada Plaza Oasis Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, MO.
