Applications now available for Angus Foundation scholarships
Young people actively involved in the Angus breed who are pursuing degrees are encouraged to apply for a scholarship from the Angus Foundation.
“Giving scholarships to deserving Angus youth is one of the favorite parts of my job,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “These outstanding young people will go on to make important contributions to the Angus industry, and the Angus Foundation is proud to support them.”
Undergraduate student scholarship applications are available online at www.angusfoundation.org, and are due May 1. Applicants must be previous or current National Junior Angus Association members or a regular or life member of the American Angus Association. Applications must be a graduating high school senior or enrolled at a junior college, four-year college/university or other accredited institution and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Applicants are required to submit the following for consideration: the 2017 application form; three letters of recommendation; a copy of the applicant’s current college/university transcript, if applicable; and applicant’s AAA member code.
Graduate student scholarship applications are also available online at www.angusfoundation.org and are due May 1. Eligibility requirements and application guidelines are included. Applicants will want to strictly adhere to the guidelines and provide the information requested when submitting their application to the Angus Foundation.
In 2016, the Angus Foundation awarded more than $212,000 in scholarships to more than 50 undergraduate and graduate students.

WPA donates to area food bank
The Wisconsin Pork Association donated 1,600 pounds of pork loin – or 8,000 servings – to Second Harvest of Southern Wisconsin.
The pork arrived at the food bank on Thursday, December 22 and will be distributed to over 600 Wisconsin families through Second Harvest’s mobile pantry program over the next two weeks.
WPA coordinated the donation and delivery with Sioux-Preme Packing in Sioux Center, IA, which donated the freight cost for the delivery to Second Harvest. The company also pre-cut the loins into 1 to 2 pound individual packages, which are ideal for the many smaller families Second Harvest serves and also helps prevent waste.
In addition to the pork, WPA also provided recipe cards with instructions on how to prepare pork, as well as instant read thermometers to help ensure recipients cook the pork to the proper 145 degree internal temperature.
Youth Pig Project scholarships available
The Wisconsin Pork Association Youth Committee is once again offering Youth Pig Project scholarships.
These scholarships are designed to assist 4-H and FFA members in establishing swine projects that can lead to development of life skills and career opportunities in the Wisconsin pork industry. 4-H and FFA youth are eligible to apply for a $50 scholarship used to offset costs associated with their 2017 pig project.
Interested youth may download the scholarship application form from the WPA website at www.wppa.org/youth-pig-project or call the WPA office at 800-822-7675 to have a copy mailed. Completed application forms must be submitted no later than February 1, 2017.
Producers: Help identify swine vets
Often in Wisconsin, finding a veterinarian that is willing to be a veterinarian of record for a veterinary-client-patient-relationship is a challenge for many swine farmers. With the upcoming full implementation of the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) regulations in January 2017, the University of Wisconsin-Extension Swine Team wanted to be proactive in getting farmers connected with veterinary services that are willing to practice on swine.
The Swine Team has created a map listing veterinary practices who provide swine services for swine farmers throughout the state, including any neighboring state services that are also licensed for practice in Wisconsin. The map can be found on the UW-Extension Swine Team website at http://fyi.uwex.edu/swineextension/.
