Hearing Set on New Veterinary Medical Surgery Rule
A public hearing scheduled for November 30 will allow the public to comment on proposed rule revisions relating to the definition of veterinary medical surgery.
The Veterinary Examining Board has proposed a rule revision that would broaden the current definition of surgery. Currently, the definition of surgery, for veterinary medical practice is limited to procedures that are for therapeutic purposes. The change would allow for other types of surgeries including reproductive, cosmetic and other purposes that do not fall clearly within the category of therapeutic.
The hearing is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 30, board room State Agriculture Building, 2811 Agriculture Dr., Madison. Veterinary Examining Board Seeks Rules Advisory Committee Members
The Wisconsin Veterinary Examining Board (VEB) is forming an 11-member committee with a directive to assist with amending the veterinary examining rules concerning complimentary, alternative, and integrative therapies. The committee will consist of 11 voting members: five licensed veterinarians, two certified veterinary technicians, two public members, two members from parallel professions, and one non-voting Board Liaison.
The proposed rules may modify the definition of complimentary, alternative, and integrative therapy to align it with the current legal definition of veterinary practice and to add additional therapies. The proposed rule will explore possible changes to the delegation of medical acts as they relate to complimentary, alternative, and integrative therapies.
The committee members will work with the Board member liaison and staff to review surrounding states’ and other states’ approaches to these issues and provide substantive feedback to the rulemaking process. Committee members will also have administrative input, such as suggesting public hearing locations, dates and times, and reviewing a final draft before submission to the VEB for approval.
After reviewing the applications, the Board hopes to make the appointments at its meeting on January 25, 2017.

Barber Elected AHA President
Terri Barber, Channing, TX, was announced as the new president of the American Hereford Association (AHA) during the Annual Membership Meeting Oct. 28 in Kansas City, Mo. Her family owns and operates Barber Ranch, Channing, TX. Founded in 1904, Barber Ranch was a 2004 honoree of the Texas Family Land Heritage Program for being in continuous family ownership for 100 years.
Barber said as president, she plans to continue to focus on programs that will help Hereford breeders produce genetics that will benefit from economically relevant traits highly sought in all industry segments. Equally important will be supporting our junior members, Hereford Youth Foundation of America and National Hereford Women affiliates and their unparalleled growth in ensuring the next generation stays committed and successful.
Selected to serve as the 2016 vice president was Kevin Schultz, Haviland, KS. Schultz manages his family’s Sandhill Farms, a seven-generation, diversified farming and cattle operation.
Directors elected Delegates elected three new directors during the membership meeting. Joel Birdwell, Kingfisher, OK.,Tommy Mead, Midville, GA; and Bruce Thomas, Gold Creek, MT., will serve four-year terms on the 12-member Board.
Completing their terms on the AHA Board were outgoing president Sam Shaw, Caldwell, ID; Curtis Curry, McAlester, OK; and Jonny Harris, Screven, GA.
