Corn silage whole-plant moisture testing planned

Wisconsin State Farmer
Moisture testing for corn is planned at many sites around Wisconsin.

Kewaunee and Door County UW-Extension will offer an opportunity to have standing corn intended for corn silage tested for whole plant moisture on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Rio Creek Feed Mill, 715 Frontier Rd, Luxemburg.

All testing will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.. On-site testing will take place and results will be ready within minutes of plant delivery. Testing will also take place on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Door County Co-Op, 6460 Hwy. 42/57, Sturgeon Bay. This date is for sample drop-off only.

The purpose of the testing is to check the whole plant moisture level of the corn and determine the optimal harvest date. To participate in the testing, please bring 4-5 stalks of corn with you, bundled and tagged. Please include variety, relative maturity, and planting date. The sample should be a representative sample of your entire field.

The samples will be delivered to the Dairyland Laboratories, Inc. for testing. Samples delivered the day before will not be tested. There is no charge for the testing and there is a limit of two free samples per farm. There will be a $12 charge for additional samples.

Nitrate testing is also available for $9. Payment will be due when samples are delivered.

This educational effort is sponsored by UW-Extension. For more information please contact Aerica Bjurstrom, Kewaunee County Agriculture Agent at 388-7138 or Annie Deutsch, Door County Agriculture Agent at 746-2263.
