Father and son open new Mexican restaurant in San Angelo
San Angelo has gained a new restaurant, serving up Mexican cuisine by father-and-son duo Juan and Francisco Mendoza.
Olivia’s Restaurant, at the old Las Camelias’ location at 2011 N. Chadbourne St., opened Feb. 16. The name comes from Francisco’s unborn daughter, who was miscarried.
“We’re doing this for her,” Francisco said.
Francisco’s father, he said, has worked in restaurants for years, while Francisco has served in customer service-related positions, most recently owning Cisco’s AV Install.
When the building became available, owned by family members of the Mendozas, Juan decided to quit his restaurant job so he and his son could open their own.
About two weeks in, Francisco said everything has been going well.
“We’ve been busy,” he said, pointing to the specials they run all day every day, including a special for two burgers, two fries and two drinks for $12.
What sets their restaurant apart from the others, he said, are the portions for the price.
“The amount is a lot more than you would normally get at other restaurants,” he said.
That comes from the fact that they are a family of six, Francisco said.
“We’d love for a family of four-plus to come in, eat and enjoy it, and not take a huge hit on that week’s budget.”
Additionally, Francisco said, the flavoring of their dishes is authentic, thanks to the spices Juan uses.
“We were born in Mexico, and whenever I go to eat in Mexican restaurants, I don’t see it much,” he said of the authenticity.
His favorite dish is the one named after him, Francisco’s Special: grilled chicken or shrimp, smothered with a variety of veggies and served with a side of rice and beans.
The most popular so far, he said, is a creation of his father’s that includes grilled shrimp and veggies covered in a homemade red sauce with a side of rice and beans.
Olivia’s Restaurant is open 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.
