MANITOWOC - The new Irish pub in the city’s downtown is going down well, especially the Guinness and Smithwick’s Irish Ale.
“We’ve been swamped,” said owner Tim Moore, who opened Moore’s Irish Pub at 811 Jay St. about two weeks ago. He’s now up to full speed at the pub, which serves food you might find at an Irish pub, as well as 12 taps of beer, including four Irish brews — including Guinness, Smithwick’s, Harp and Murphy’s Irish Stout.
“I’ve been surprised and happy about how busy it’s been,” Moore said. “Especially Wednesdays. I didn’t know people went out so much on Wednesdays.”
Moore tells Streetwise the experience is new for him. He’s never owned a bar or restaurant, and never even so much as worked at a fast-food joint.
Still, born and raised in the city, he’s always had an eye on the old building, which his brother and parents helped renovate. Moore wanted the idea of a traditional European pub, with dark wood floors, old pictures, and minimal TVs or neon lights.
“Most of what you see are sports-bar type places,” Moore said. “I wanted something different.”
There’s not a full kitchen at the site, but they offer foods like Irish beef stew, shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash or deli sandwiches. He plans to renovate the upstairs area for those who want to reserve space for special events.
Hours are 4-11 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; 11 a.m. to close (usually bar time) Thursday, Friday and Saturday; and 11 a.m. to close (around 10 p.m.) on Sunday.
