5 TV shows and movies to stream in January
You may have plenty of New Year's resolutions in store for 2019, but don't forget that Jan. 1 also marked the start of a new month, and thus, a new cycle of streaming TV shows and movies on sites like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.
From some movie favorites to 2018 TV shows you might have missed, we picked the five best streaming newcomers to add to your queues this month.
If you keep struggling to find your favorite movies on Netflix: 'The Dark Knight'
It's no secret that Netflix is focusing more on original content these days than making old movies and TV shows available. On the TV side of things this isn't a huge issue considering how much original and international content the streaming service has made available. The movie side is a different story. For awhile, especially before the streaming service amped up their own original movie efforts with films like "Set It Up," the movie selection on Netflix was less than desirable. Thankfully, they're still getting some old favorites, like "The Dark Knight," the sensational 2008 Batman film that won Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar and helped kick off our current superhero obsession.
Stream it on Netflix.
If you want good, clean, bonkers '80s fun: 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun'
Picture this: Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt and Shannen Doherty as teens, clad in the very worst fashions of the 1980s, dancing their hearts out. You don't have to imagine it, because it's a real movie. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is an underrated masterpiece of cheese that checks off so many '80s cliches you'd think it was a modern movie parodying the decade. And yes, the Cyndi Lauper song does make an appearance.
Stream it on Hulu.
If you missed one of the best TV shows of 2018 on FX: 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story'
If you liked 2016's "The People vs. O.J. Simpson," the follow-up "American Crime Story" season is just as good if not better. It's certainly more devastating as it tells, in reverse chronological order, the story of spree killer Andrew Cunanan, who killed Gianni Versace and four other men in 1997.
Stream it on Netflix (Jan. 17).
If you missed one of the other best TV shows of 2018 on FX: 'Atlanta'
The second season of Donald Glover's FX comedy/drama will finally be available to stream this month so if you missed it on cable, now's the perfect time to catch up. The Emmy-winning series only got better and more experimental in the new episodes, dubbed "Robbin' Season."
Stream it on Hulu.
If you missed one of the best films of 2018: 'Eighth Grade'
Stand-up comedian Bo Burnham directs a film that makes it painfully clear what it's like growing up in the age of social media. Starring a bright young talent in Elsie Fisher, now a Golden Globe nominee, "Eighth Grade" is as awkward as it is beautiful.
Stream it on Amazon (Jan. 13).
