5 things to know about birthday girl Yara Shahidi
The politically-minded Yara Shahidi turns 17 on Friday, and to celebrate, we're sharing five facts you might not know about the teen with a sense of self beyond her years.
1. Fame runs in the family
Her mother, Keri Shahidi, is an actress and her younger brother, Sayeed Shahidi, played Miles on the now-canceled ABC series, Uncle Buck. The young starlet is also close to the rapper Nas.
"I have always felt his impact and the influence of his music in my life," she said while honoring the rapper at the Revolt Music Conference gala ceremony last year. "From memorizing the lyrics to What Goes Around to analyzing The Message and One Mic, I’ve grown up with his song I Can as my anthem, and my daily motivation with If I Ruled the World as the reminder of the power and magic of our people, with Destroy and Rebuild as the inspiration behind my activism."
2. She's of Iranian descent
In response to Trump's immigration ban, Shahidi took to Instagram to share her parents' love story and take a stand against "stereotypical narratives that promote hate."
3. She already outspoken about issues of women empowerment
"There is no reason that a girl should feel limited by the standards of other people,” the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) advocate said during an interview with Vogue published last April. “Not all girls or people of color have those opportunities, and there’s often pressure to make a choice — I can be pretty and popular or I can be smart.
Shahidi, who co-hosted the White House Science Fair Livestream with model Karlie Kloss last year, continued saying, "I can have a lot of friends or I can talk about the issues that matter to me. No one should feel forced to make that choice; you can have the best of both worlds."
She also participated in this year's Women's March in L.A.
4. She's a black belt in karate
During an appearance of Fuse's White Guy Talk Show in 2015 demonstrated her skills with hosts Saurin Choksi and Grace Parra.
5. Her fashion is fierce
