Giving you one more reason to head to Target, the super-popular car seat trade-in event returns Sunday.

Whether your child recently outgrew his or her car seat or it has been long lost in the garage fermenting from Goldfish and sippy cup residue, Target will take it.

And then it’ll give you a 20 percent coupon.

This year, the discount can be used on even more of the baby gear you’d already be buying at Target anyway. Like past events, the coupon is valid for a new car seat, booster seat, car seat base, travel system or stroller. Now, playards, high chairs, swings, rockers and bouncers are also included.

The trade-in event runs from Sept. 9-22.

How it works:

  • Bring your car seat to Target's Guest Services and place it in the drop-off box.
  • Pick up your 20 percent off coupon. (The coupon can be used in store or online.)
  • The coupon is eligible through Oct. 6.
  • Guests get one coupon per seat dropped off. This coupon can be stacked with existing baby sale items, such as 10 percent off select car seats.

What you need to know:

  • Target will accept infant seats, convertible seats, car seat bases, harness or booster car seats and car seats that are expired or damaged.
  • You can bring in any cart seat, regardless of brand or where it was purchased.
  • Pretty much all Target stores are participating, excluding the small-format ones.

Car seat materials will get a new life

Target is once again partnering with Waste Management to recycle car seat materials. The old seats get turned into new products like pallets and plastic buckets, as well as construction materials like steel beams and carpet padding, according to Target.

Since the program launched in April 2016, more than 306,000 car seats (or more than 4.6 million pounds of materials) have been recycled, the company said.
