Quincy Jones sorry for 'silly' interview quotes
Quincy Jones, the music maestro whose recent interviews have sparked furious rows among friends and admirers, apologized on Twitter Thursday for "silly" things he has said.
In a tweet, Jones said his six daughters took him aside for a "family intervention" after two recent interviews led to public discussion of, for example, whether his late pals, comedian Richard Pryor and actor Marlon Brando, slept together.
"I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSON!," the long tweet said. "Let me tell you, I am so grateful for my daughters because they are not afraid to stand up to their daddy. I am an imperfect human & I'm not afraid to say it. I'm sorry & I'm not afraid to say it."
Jones blamed age, his giving up drinking three years ago and memory problems for his garrulous interviews in Vulture and GQ recently. Among other topics in the profanity-pocked Q&As, he said he didn't care for Taylor Swift's music, once dated Ivanka Trump and once thought the Beatles were bad musicians.
"Even at 85, it's apparent that 'wordvomit' and bad-mouthing is inexcusable," he continued. He said his "bad-mouthing" contradicted messages he wanted to convey, about racism, inequality, homophobia and poverty. He said he had already reached out to his friends to apologize privately.
"But when you live a public life you have a responsibility to be an example & since I do live a public life I wanted to make a public apology," he wrote.
"I am sorry to anyone to whom my words offended & I'm especially sorry to my friends who are still here with me & to those who aren't," he wrote. He thanks his friends and family for their "grace."
"Thank you for calling me out when I've clearly made a mistake...many mistakes," he said. "I hear ALL of you & I thank you."
He signed it: "Love an 85-year-old bow-legged man who is still learning from his mistakes."
He did not explicitly retract his claim about Pryor and Brando.
Two weeks ago, after the Vulture interview began attracting a lot of baffled attention, Pryor's daughter, Rain Pryor, furiously denied her father and Brando ever slept together and poured scorn on everyone gleefully gossiping about it, including her father's widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor, who confirmed Jones' claim.
In two lengthy online diatribes, Rain Pryor denounced Jones and her stepmother.
"Q, was once a brilliant music producer who is losing his mind, and decided to garner publicity for himself with a sensationalized interview; and because y’all think and equate Fame and Money with decency, you ate it up like thirsty dogs, as he spewed out a lie about my father who’s not here to defend himself," she declared in a Facebook post, since deleted.
