"I've fallen and I can't get up!" You're probably familiar with the old TV commercial.

The village of Summit Police Department has responded to plenty of calls to help people who have fallen. But on Feb. 8, it responded to a different kind of call: a fallen horse. Mary Jung, a Summit resident, called police to ask for help with the downed equine.

"Honestly I've never had a call like that before," said Sgt. Brian Wraalstad. "We get a lot of calls involving people falling, but not animals."

In this case, the horse had slipped in the pasture, which had frozen into a sheet of ice, and was unable to get back to her feet. Jung could not be reached for comment.

Wraalstad and Officers Brianna Braunschweig and Kyle Palm jumped in to help at the farm on Delafield Road west of Daystar Lane.

Wraalstad said they laid pieces of carpeting and hay down to coax the horse to get up. Palm found a piece of plywood that they slid underneath the distressed horse to help her get back on her feet.

"I don't know how long she had been down, but we were able to get her up," said Wraalstad

After the officers helped her up they called the Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital to check up on the horse and make sure she was OK.

"We don't usually deal with things like that, but when someone's looking for help we try to do anything to help," said Wraalstad. "She looked like she was suffering, and in our department we take a very conscientious approach to helping all of our citizens."
