MADISON – When Governor Scott Walker sent out the call asking students from across the state to decorate this year's State Capitol Christmas tree, they didn't disappoint him.

Ornaments from students representing 100 schools, 4-H clubs, scouting organizations and more poured into the capitol building by the Nov. 22 deadline. Each ornament depicts this year's theme celebrating the Capitol building's 100th Birthday.

“Every year, visitors come from all over to visit the Capitol and see its magnificent Christmas tree,” Governor Walker said. “With the centennial celebration of our state’s Capitol building occurring this year, we wanted this year’s State Capitol Christmas tree to honor and celebrate this milestone.”

And celebrate it they did. The 40-foot balsam fir from Price County, lit with 2,000 LED multi-colored lights, is decked out with hundreds of ornaments featuring Bucky Badger, the iconic capitol building, birthday cakes and candles, the state bird, cheese, dairy cows, W's, sleds, flowers created using the state map and more.

Teachers and staff overseeing the creative artwork shared their children's experiences making the ornaments by sharing pictures and stories via Facebook and Twitter using #WICapitolTree.

Staff from Dr. Rosa Minoka-Hill School in the Green Bay School District posted on Twitter images of students creating and personalizing wooden ornaments bound for Madison, while students from Lodi proudly showed off replicas of the state capitol building topped with a candle and jaunty party hat.

The 35-year-old tree was donated by the Jim and Debbie Ryf family from Emery, WI, who joined Gov. Walker on Dec. 1 for the official tree lighting ceremony.
