MADISON, WIS. – The team from Wisconsin took home top honors in the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest on Monday, October 2.

The Wisconsin team of Ben Buske, Dawson Nickels, Kylie Nickels and Matthew Gunst finished the contest as the top team overall and the first-place team in reasons, with all the team members placing in the top five for reasons.

The Wisconsin team is coached by Linda Behling and Carrie Warmka.

Coming in a close second place finish overall and second overall in reasons, was the Maryland team of Todd Allen, Faith Burton, Ethan Miller and Alicia Hoff.

Top Ten Teams – Overall: Wisconsin, 1; Maryland, 2; Missouri, 3; Minnesota, 4; Michigan, 5; Illinois, 6; Ohio, 7; Indiana, 8; Washington, 9; and Pennsylvania, 10.

Top Ten Individuals – Overall

Kylie Nickels, of Wisconsin, took home the honor of high individual overall, beating out Jacob Twohey, Minn., by two points. Other Wisconsin team members ranking among the high finishers include Ben Buske (7) and Matthew Gunst (10).

Finishing in the Top 10 were: Nickels, 688, WI, 1; Jacob Twohey, 686, MN, 2; Todd Allen, 685, MD, 3; Faith Burton, 681, MD, 4; Miriah Dershem, 676, MN, 5; Lora Wright, 673, MO, 6; Ben Buske, 668, WI, 7; Grace Klopfenstein, 668, IN, 8; Ellie Wantland, 667, MO, 9; and Matthew Gunst, 661, WI, 10.

Top Ten Teams – Reasons

Wisconsin was the clear winner among the teams finishing in the Top Ten of the Reasons category, finishing with 687 point to earn first place.

Top Ten Teams include: Wisconsin, 687, 1; Maryland, 654, 2; Missouri, 648, 3; Michigan, 648, 4; Minnesota, 638, 5; Kentucky, 631, 6;Ohio, 628, 7; Illinois, 623, 8; Pennsylvania, 613, 9; and Indiana, 606, 10.

Top Ten Individuals – Reasons

Taking the top two spots in the individual reasons category were Wisconsin teammates Matthew Gunst, finishing first with 237 points followed by second place finisher Dawson Nickels, with 228 points. Fellow Badger state teammates Ben Buske placed fourth with 227 points ahead of fifth place finisher Kylie Nickels with 226 points.

Other top placers in the category include: Faith Burton, 227, MD, 3; Todd Allen, 226, MD, 6;  Alicia Hoff, 225, MD, 7; Jacob Twohey, 224, MN, 8; Miriah Dershem, 223, MN, 9; and Lora Wright, 222, MO, 10.
