GREEN BAY - The Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) announce their PDPW Dairy Dialogue Day Tour, a chartered farm tour facilitated by Dr. Randy Shaver, professor of nutrition at University of Wisconsin-Madison. The tour will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April. 20, and features Betley Family Farms and Synergy Family Dairy, both of Pulaski.
The bus will depart the Fleet Farm West Auto Center, 325 N. Taylor Street, Green Bay, Wis., promptly at 9:00 a.m. and return by 3:30 p.m. The tour is limited to the first 50 dairy farmer registrations.
Betley Family Farms, is a third-generation modern family farm owned by Jeff and Jenna Betley who milk 1,700 cows three times a day, focusing on cow comfort and health, land stewardship, and family. Their herd averages over 100 pounds/cow/day and changes in their youngstock program has enabled them to more economically grow their next generation.
Synergy Family Dairy, is owned and operated by the Gary and Linda Olson and Jay and Heather Jauquet and their sons. They milk 285 cows and take great pride in their home-bred, high genetic herd, which excels in both genomics and in show type. Their exceptional calf raising program yields high growth rates of 2.25 - 2.5 pounds per day and they recently improve pregnancy rates by over 5 percent.
The family farms will highlight short- and long-term management strategies, reproductive goals, calf raising programs, genetics and overall production. Dairy farmers will see state of the art facilities and engage with other dairy farmers, herd owners and managers to discuss their daily management protocols and on-farm success stories. Dr. Shaver, will facilitate conversations both on-farm and between the tours.
Dr. Shaver has been on faculty of the Department of Dairy Science with UW-Madison since 1988. Dr. Shaver’s extension and research programs focus on applied nutrition in lactating dairy cattle.
