Indianapolis - Wisconsin FFA members brought home their fair share of honors and accolades during the 89th annual National FFA Convention & Expo held Oct. 19-22 in Indianapolis.

National Chapter Awards

The National Chapter Award program recognizes FFA chapters that successfully complete an annual Program of Activities which includes a series of activities designed to encourage its members to grow as individuals, to work as part of a team and to serve others.

Three stars: Edgar HS FFA, Freedom HS FFA, Lodi HS FFA, Manawa Little Wolf HS FFA, Waupaca HS FFA, and Weyauwega Fremont HS FFA.

Two stars: Adams Friendship HS FFA, Badger HS FFA, Barron HS FFA, Big Foot HS FFA, Granton HS FFA, Holmen HS FFA, Monticello HS FFA, Owen-Withee HS, Prairie Farm HS FFA Randolph HS FFA, River Valley HS FFA, Sauk Prairie HS FFA, Shullsburg FFA, Stanley Boyd HS FFA, Stevens Point Sr. HS FFA, Stratford HS FFA, Waupun FFA, and Winneconne HS FFA.

One star: Colby HS FFA.

National Chapter, National Finalists

Model of Innovation: Student Development: Manawa FFA, Autism Awareness; Chapter Development: Edgar FFA, Kindness Challenge: Community Development: Freedom FFA, Painting windows, generating smiles; Model of Excellence national finalist: Waupun FFA.

The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their SAEs, have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers.

National Agricultural Proficiency

Winners of the 2016 National Agricultural Proficiency Awards were announced on Friday, Oct. 21 during the sixth general session at the 89th National FFA Convention & Expo. Awards were given in 47 categories.

Agricultural Mechanics Repair and Maintenance Placement, Brandon Anding of the Granton FFA Chapter. Dairy Production Placement, Erica Lynn Helmer of the Plymouth FFA; Diversified Horticulture Entrepreneurship/Placement Zachary Olson of the Adams Friendship FFA Chapter;  Grain Production Placement Josh J. Anderson of the Wisconsin Dells FFA Chapter.

Career Development events

Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management CDE. This is a competitive event that tests the student's ability to select and manage quality dairy cattle. Each team competed at local and state levels to earn the privilege of representing their home state at the National FFA Convention & Expo. Placing 7th was the Wisconsin team of Thomas Christenson, Meikah Dado, Jillian Jensen, and Taylor Elwood, all of Amery FFA.

Placing third in the National FFA Parliamentary Procedure Career Development Event (CDE) was the Wisconsin team comprised of Dylan Clausen, Michaela Erickson, Deanna Meyer, Jenesis Gustafson, Max Johnson, and Emma Curtis, all of Amery FFA. The event tests students' ability to effectively communicate ideas during a meeting.

Braden Kundert of Lake Geneva-Badger FFA earned a fourth place individual finish in the Speaking Career Development Event. The recognizes outstanding FFA members for their ability to prepare and present a factual speech on a specific agricultural issue in a well thought-out and logical manner in a competitive setting.

Power, Structural and Technical Systems - Domonic Johnson, New Auburn, 16, Bronze; Chris Wolter, Big Foot FFA, 6, Gold; Zachary Fedie and Peyton Trowbridge, New Auburn FFA, 8, Silver; Jacob Markhardt and Benett Bucek, Black River Falls FFA, 9, Silver.

Social Systems - Abby Field, Wonewoc Center FFA, 3, Gold; Cailey McLain, Adams-Friendship FFA, 8, Silver; Tatum Mierow and Ashley Hansen, Wrightstown FFA, 8, Silver.

American Star

The American Star Awards represent the best of the best among thousands of American FFA Degree recipients. Finalists for the award have mastered skills in production, finance, management and/or research.

2016 American Star Finalists are: Agricultural Placement - Nathan Leystra of the Randolph Cambria- Friesland FFA Chapter. Ag placement recognizes one member with the best placement SAE program and proven leadership skills is selected to be the American Star in Agricultural Placement.

FFA members who have earned their American FFA Degrees are eligible for the American Star Awards.

Honorary American Degree

Honorary American Degree Recipients, Jan Shepel of Deforest and teacher recipients, Ralph Johnson of South Wayne FFA and Kevin Whalen of Arcadia FFA. Johnson and Whalen were recognized for creating high-quality agricultural education programs which inspire and motivate their students to strive for success.
