Wisconsin Farmers Union is hosting its 83rd Annual State Convention, Jan. 24-26, at Hotel Mead in Wisconsin Rapids. The theme of this year's convention is "United to Grow Family Agriculture: Celebrating the International Year of Family Farming." All guests are welcome but only member delegates may vote.
The weekend will begin with a pre-convention workshop, in partnership with the Midwest Value Added Agriculture Conference (MVVAC). The MVVAC conferences provide valuable education to small scale farmers, regional educators, and farm service professionals to help increase the economic vitality of our rural communities.
Convention speakers will include Larry Mitchell from the USDA, WFU member Erin Schneider talking about her trip to Zambia for the World Farm Organization Women's Conference, and Sarah Lloyd and Tara Turner with the Wisconsin Food Hub sharing knowledge on local food systems.
There will also be time for several small discussion sessions for members to share ideas, information, and perspectives on key policy issues. Mike McCabe, from Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, will be the keynote speaker at the Saturday night banquet, and afterward Larry Heagle will entertain with music and comedy.
Activities will include a Friday "Casino Night" fundraiser to help raise money for Kamp Kenwood, panel presentations and workshops on inspiring youth for agriculture, commodity marketing, AARP programs, and climate change.
Other activities include a concurrent Youth Convention for grades 7-12, Torchbearer's Award Presentation for youth program graduates, as well as WFU resolutions and policy discussions.
