Rhody Fresh co-operative

gets $150,000 federal grant

May 9, 2013 | 0 comments

The farm cooperative that produces Rhody Fresh Milk has won a $150,000 federal grant that will help upgrade its production facilities.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced the grant for the Rhode Island Dairy Farms Cooperative during a recent visit to Escobar's Highland Farm in Portsmouth.

Reed's office says Rhody Fresh will use the money to upgrade its production facilities and help promote new products, including locally-made butter and cheeses using milk from its farms.

The U.S. Agriculture Department awarded grants to 110 farming and agriculture producers. More than 430 applied.

The cooperative was formed in 2004 by a group of five farmers. Rhody Fresh Milk now has nine dairy farms in the state. The co-op has more than $3 million in gross revenue from its milk production operations.
