Gopher Dairy Camp registration

May 3, 2012 | 0 comments

The 9th annual Gopher Dairy Camp will be held Sunday through Tuesday, June 10-12, at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota.

The camp is hosted by the Gopher Dairy Club in cooperation with the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Project Committee.

Its goal is to provide dairy youth the opportunity to strengthen their dairy knowledge and skills as well as to network with other dairy youth.

In its 9th year, the Gopher Dairy Camp is open to all youth that have completed grades 6-11, but have not yet started 12th grade.

The camp's agenda offers unique workshops, which will allow attendees to excel in the show ring and improve their knowledge of the production and processing of dairy products.

The primary focus areas of the camp are calf selection, show-ring preparation of dairy cattle and showmanship.

Campers have the opportunity to select a calf from the St. Paul Dairy herd via the Gopher Gold Auction, and prepare that calf for showing.

Professional cattle fitters will be on-site for demonstrations and hands-on assistance in clipping and show-ring preparation. On the final day of the camp, a showmanship contest will allow campers to showcase what they have learned.

Throughout the camp, a number of social mixers are offered, including a trip to a St. Paul Saints baseball game and a night at Tropics Indoor Water Park in Shoreview.

Registration fee is $60, which covers the cost of the dormitory, meals and camp materials. Registration information is available on-line at http://www.ansci.umn.edu/gopherdairycamp, or by calling 507-995-7084.
