Public meeting slated to explain WI Act 377 to farmers, local officials

BARRON

An informational meeting explaining Wisconsin Act 377, the new law dealing with "Implements of Husbandry," will be held Tuesday, July 15, at UW-Barron County Campus, Rice Lake, WI, beginning at noon. This meeting will be held in the Blue Hills lecture hall inside Ritzinger Hall on the UW-Barron County Campus.

Wisconsin Act 377 modernizes Wisconsin's existing laws concerning farm machinery traveling on public roads. The legislation establishes height, length, weight and width parameters to better represent the size and use of modern machinery that at times needs to be operated on roadways. A no-fee permitting system has been put in place to address both farmers' need to get their machinery from farm to field and local township and county officials' responsibility to protect the taxpayer investment put into roads and bridges.

Act 377 was signed into law by Gov. Walker on April 23. Most provisions of the legislation are currently in effect with a few exceptions. Some requirements of Act 377 will go into effect January 1, 2015 and others November 1, 2015.

The Act 377 Informational Meeting is designed to help farmers understand how this new law will affect them and the machinery they use in their farming operation. County and township officials are also encouraged to attend the informational meeting because Act 377 will impact how they govern the use of local roads as it relates to farm equipment. Farm machinery dealers are also encouraged to attend because Act 377 contains provisions that will impact their businesses.

The WITC-Farm Business Program, UW-Extension-Barron County and the Barron County Farm Bureau are co-sponsoring the Act 377 Informational Meeting on July 15. The meeting is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required.

The UW-Barron County Campus is located at 1800 College Drive in Rice Lake. The Blue Hills lecture hall can be accessed by entering through the Administration Building (Meggers Hall).
