Teams of Dodge County 4-H youth earned top scores at the state Meats Judging Contest, held February 15 at University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The Senior Meats team ranked 2nd overall and the Junior Meats team ranked 6th overall in their respective divisions. The senior team will travel to Denver in January 2015 to compete at the national level.
The Meats Judging Contest tests the knowledge of youth in placement of carcass and retail cut classes; carcass grading; retail cut identification; food safety; labeling and nutrition and a quiz. Dodge County Meats Judging Team members began weekly practices in October, under the guidance of coach Becky Doman. Thanks goes to supportive families who committed much time and resources to the judging workouts!
Senior team members who ranked in the top ten overall scores follow: Jesse Lynch of Reeseville, 6th, Samuel Nehls of Horicon, 9th, and Natalie Siedschlag of Watertown, 10th. Other senior team members were Richard Condon, Watertown, and Mary Kirchberg, Columbus.
Earning a 9th place overall score for the junior team division was Riley Kappell of Watertown. Also on the junior team was Mackenzie Schraufnagel, Beaver Dam, and Evelyn, Gretchen and Keteri Kirchberg, Columbus.
