Fire damages headquarters of Organic Valley

May 17, 2013 | 0 comments

Fire broke out at the La Farge headquarters of Organic Valley Tuesday afternoon, causing severe damage to two-thirds of the building, company officials said.

The blaze started at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a building that was fairly new, having been built in 2004 and expanded in 2010 and 2011.

At press time it wasn’t clear what had started the fire in the home office of the country’s largest organic dairy cooperative.

According to the La Crosse Tribune, the fire heavily damaged the executive offices and human resources departments at the building from the inside out. The fire started at the end of the workday as most employees were preparing to leave for the day; there were no reported injuries.

Fire crews from La Farge, Viola, Viroqua, Westby-Christiana, Coon Valley, Yuba, Ontario and Richland Center provided mutual aid in the large fire.

In addition to the co-op’s headquarters in La Farge, Organic Valley has a large distribution center in Cashton and may use part of that building as office space as the fire’s damage is assessed.

Organic Valley has 1,800 members in the United States and Canada – with 200 added just last year.

The co-op, led by Chief Operating Officer George Siemon, had said earlier this year that it plans a major expansion into foreign markets.

Organic Valley is the largest employer in Vernon County.

The organic farmer-owned business was founded in 1988 with the Coulee Region Organic Produce Pool (CROPP) and began with growing fresh vegetables. It quickly expanded into organic dairy products and added the name Organic Valley as demand and production on the dairy side grew.
