Race to the State Fair with DATCP

July 16, 2014 | 0 comments

MADISON

Race the Veggie 500 and so much more at the Farm and Family Building at the Wisconsin State Fair, July 31-Aug. 10.

The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will again host fun and educational activities for the whole family to show how they are working for you all day, every day.

Fairgoers should plan to join in the annual Veggie 500 races in the Farm and Family Building. The Wisconsin State FFA officers lead five races each hour. Children will be able to cheer on their favorite vegetable car and receive a prize ribbon for participating.

New this year, the building will include a home office area. Play a game to learn basic consumer protection tips and how to protect your identity at home and over the phone. Pick up helpful information to share with friends and family.

Learn more about the foods you buy in the grocery store and how they go from the farm fork to dinner fork. Children can color a small picture, and they will make it into a button to wear and take home.

Come and spin two trivia wheels. One will include questions about Wisconsin agriculture; the state is home to nearly 70,000 farms. The other wheel will focus on food safety tips for your kitchen. Participants can take home a handy card to help remember proper cooking temperatures and how long to store food safely.

Play the new manure toss game with DATCP staff to learn more about how farmers apply nutrients on farm fields to grow crops and protect the water. Visit the backyard area to learn more about animal health and how to care for your favorite pets.

The 67th Alice in Dairyland, Zoey Brooks, will welcome visitors daily to the Farm and Family Building at select times. Visitors to the building will be able to keep cool at the fair by picking up a colorful hand fan. Limited quantities are available.
