Records broken at governor's meat product auction at State Fair

Gov. Scott Walker joined Fairest of the Fair Kaitlyn Riley and Alice in Dairyland Zoey Brooks in hosting the Blue Ribbon Meat Products Auction on Aug. 5 at the State Fair. The auction directly benefits Wisconsin's 4-H Foundation and the 350,000 4-H youth through leadership development, programs and scholarships.

The event brought in more than $150,000, surpassing the organizers' goal of $100,000 to commemorate the 100th year of 4-H. Last year's auction raised $80,988.

The 23rd annual Governor's Blue Ribbon Meat Products Auction is held in coordination with the Wisconsin State Fair Meat Products Contest held by the Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors, University of Wisconsin-Madison Animal Science Department and the Wisconsin State Fair.

Bidding active

Walker worked the crowd from the stage, encouraging bidders to increase their bids, and contributed to a sale. The auction's proceeds support Wisconsin 4-H activities including 4-H conferences, teaching materials, workshops and overall development of 4-H youth.

Besides the 4-H youth, the star of the evening was Maplewood Meats, the meat processor from Green Bay who was named 2014 Best in Show. Maplewood Meats, who earned the honor for their summer sausage, competed against over 100 entries for the coveted title. The Best in Show Summer Sausage sold for $16,000 to a consortium formed by Egg Innovations, Country Fresh Meats, Wisconsin Souvenir Milkcaps and Bob and Jill Nieskes.

Auctioneers Bob Johnson and Gary Finley; emcee Bob Meyer; and Walker not only sold each Grand Champion and Reserve Champion entry from the Wisconsin State Fair Meat Products Contest but also several Wisconsin-themed packages. Other auction results follow.

The auction is presented by Farm Credit Associations serving Wisconsin and is a partnership of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation, Wisconsin Association of Peat Processors and Wisconsin State Fair. It is sponsored by Badgerland Financial, United FCS, AgStar, Green Stone and Schenck. Other auction sponsors included Rupena's Fine Foods.

The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation was established in 1954 in order to develop and promote 4-H programs throughout the state and to provide 4-H youth with training in group action, business methods and civic responsibility. Today, the foundation supports numerous development programs; helps fund attendance at national competitions and conferences; and grants college scholarships to support 4-H youth continuing on to post-high-school education.
