STEVENS POINT

Former Green Bay Packer running back William Henderson is just one of the many attractions for youngsters at the Youth Tent during the 2014 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Aug. 12-14.

Youth Committee co-chairs Cindy Kosmalski and Barb Kenowski noted that Henderson, who owns a yogurt shop near Wal-Mart, will be holding a meet-and-greet with the kids Wednesday afternoon and throughout the day on Thursday.

There also will be two life-size Sweet frogs in the tent who will be playing games with kids.

The Wisconsin Christmas Tree Association will have a display highlighting many of the activities involved in Christmas tree farming. "They'll also be bringing Tom the Choo Choo Train, which is a life-size train, and the kids will be able to have their pictures taken with it," said Kosmalski.

Smokey Bear, who's turning 70 this year, also will be on hand. "He'll be walking around the grounds, and we'll be having a birthday party for him," she said.

The Youth Tent will also have a fenced-in yard where a number of outdoor activities will take place.

Several FFA Contests will be held during Farm Technology Days. Ten sectional winners from throughout the state will compete in the FFA Tractor Driving and Safety Contest with the winner advancing to the National FFA Competition. State FFA Chapters also will send teams to the soil judging contest, with the top teams moving on to national competition.

The Learn 2 Fish With Us clinic will teach youth proper fishing techniques and the benefits of mastering these skills

A Pedal Tractor Pull will allow kids to participate in an event that is associated with an important part of Wisconsin's agricultural tradition.

Members of the Wisconsin Trappers Association will help youth learn about the importance of trapping as well as opportunities that trapping provides. During the show, they will be demonstrating the skinning of a muskrat.

Other displays include a milking station, dairy processing and a sensory table with forages and grains

Entertainment will be provided by magician James David, singer Tom Pease and will also include a 4-H fashion show.

The 10-member WFTD Youth Committee's goal is to ensure the youth have a positive educational experience about Wisconsin agriculture during their time at the 2014 Portage County show.
