Maine dairy buying hybrid delivery truck

Oakhurst Dairy is buying a new hybrid delivery truck it says is the first of its kind in the U.S. dairy industry.

The Portland-based company says the truck will use between 30 percent and 50 percent less fuel than its conventional trucks, burning about nine gallons a day as it delivers products to locations within 70 miles of Portland. The company will take delivery of the truck this fall.

As part of the company’s environmental commitment, Oakhurst says it has also installed a new solar energy system with 216 solar panels at its Waterville distribution center. The company is also installing devices on 25 of its large delivery trucks to cut aerodynamic drag and reduce fuel consumption.
