Smashed pumpkins equaled tasty treats at Detroit Zoo
Smashed pumpkins meant special treats for the residents of the Detroit Zoo.
The Royal Oak-based zoo says pumpkins, corn stalks and gourds were employed Wednesday, Oct. 28, in special enrichment` activities for animals. The items were hidden throughout the creatures’ habitats to simulate the normal hunting and foraging activities experienced in the wild.
The chimpanzees were treated to pumpkins filled with spaghetti, while grizzly bears were able to tackle treat-filled pinatas and bison munched on pumpkins and corn stalks.
The zoo says the seasonal treats are an annual tradition.
