Corn gives Michigan deer more places to evade hunters
Michigan hunters could see fewer deer when firearm season starts because of a relatively late corn harvest.
The Department of Natural Resources said Friday (Nov. 13) that deer will have more places to seek cover than usual because much of the state’s corn crop is still in the ground.
Less than 20 percent of the state’s corn crop had been harvested as of last week because of cold and damp weather. About 80 percent of Michigan’s corn harvest is typically finished before the start of firearm deer season.
Deer normally would seek cover in brushy or forested areas. But the unharvested corn gives them another place to go.
