Fish farmers from Wisconsin and around the Midwest will gather for the 15th annual Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference on March 19 and 20 to hear the latest and to promote the state’s growing aquaculture industry. “We’re Fresh and Local” is the theme for the event to be held at the Ramada Inn.

“Wisconsin is a leader in promoting locally grown food and the Wisconsin aquaculture industry chose this year’s theme to highlight the great quality and diversity of farm-raised fish grown in our state,” says Ron Johnson, University of Wisconsin Extension aquaculture specialist.

The conference will feature sessions on aquaponics – growing fish and plants together in one integrated system; marketing; pond management; research; regulations; and fish health. Chef Dani Klontz will prepare fish recipes for sampling.

Participants will be introduced to the newest aquaculture equipment and services, view displays on current aquaculture research and learn the winner of the third annual Wisconsin School Aquaculture poster contest, which will be judged in the afternoon on March 19.

The event is the largest aquaculture conference in the region. In addition to current and prospective fish farmers, participants will include aquaculture researchers, veterinarians, extension agents, agriculture and natural resource technicians and members of the public with an interest in aquaculture.

The Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference 2010 is sponsored by the Wisconsin Aquaculture Association, UW-Stevens Point, Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility, UW-Madison Aquaculture Program, UW Extension, and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection.

Conference registration is $100 per person; $130 for non-Wisconsin Aquaculture Association members; $85 for additional person same organization; $65 for spouse of an attendee; and $65 for students. The daily rate is $70 for Friday or Saturday. A late fee of $25 will be charged for registrations received after Mar. 4. There is a separate $15 charge for the Regulatory Rules Workshop on March 18.
