Potato referendum under way

A Wisconsin Potato Industry Board referendum got under way Nov. 2.

The Wisconsin Potato Industry Board has proposed changes to amend the current marketing order, ATCP 149, to better suit the industry. Ballots were mailed to all Wisconsin farms that grow five acres or more of potatoes. The changes proposed by the WPIB include redistricting from five districts to three districts, setting the cap on the maximum allowable assessment at a dime per hundredweight and allowing the WPIB board to change districts without holding a referendum.

To pass, the referendum requires at least half of the eligible producers to vote and at least half of those voting to vote in favor of the proposal. The referendum will run through Nov. 21.

Those who do not receive a ballot should call Noel Favia at 608-224-5140 or e-mail noel.favia@wisconsin.gov.
